When the Gospel Comes

When the gospel comes – when Jesus comes – everything changes. Life is made over. We are made over. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).  We have not resolved to do better. We have not been improved upon. We have been made new, literally born again. Having been rescued we’re moved by a holy imperative to go back into the fray and rescue others. New-made, gospel-driven people have graced the world with thousands of hospitals, clinics, colleges, safe houses, schools, and feeding centers. The gospel has set in motion more good for humanity than all other forces combined. It has accomplished what armies and governments could not. The gospel doesn’t just change conditions, it changes people. These changed people then become agents of change. Through the gospel people are changed, cultures are transformed, and God is exalted.

“Upon the gospel’s sacred page

The gathered beams of ages shine;

And, as it hastens, every age

But makes its brightness more divine.

“On mightier wing, in loftier flight,

From year to year does knowledge soar;

And, as it soars, the gospel light

Becomes effulgent more and more.

“More glorious still, as centuries roll,

New regions blessed, new powers unfurled,

Expanding with the expanding soul,

Its radiance shall overflow the world.

“Flow to restore, but not destroy,

As when the cloudless lamp of day

Pours out its floods of light and joy,

And sweeps the lingering mists away.”
